  • Introduction

The winds of nature, one of the great forces of the planet we live on. It nurtures life and human civilisation, brings about seasonal changes, snow, rain and wind, and shapes the landscapes and wonders of the world. The Qi of the human body sustains the life process of the body. Qi runs continuously, driving and regulating the body's metabolism. When the movement of Qi stops, the life activity will end.

The 100-mile windy area of Tulufan in Xinjiang, one of the three largest wind gorges in China, is so sandy that trains have to stop running and wait when the wind is too strong. The violent winds have been domesticated into an environmentally friendly energy source. It is home to Asia's largest wind farm, called the "Three Gorges on land".

At Wudang Mountain, the sacred site of Taoism, Taijiquan masters decipher the mystery of the vital Qi. The skilful application of the Qi of the human body and the Qi of heaven and earth, containing sober and wise philosophies. Such philosophical reflection aims to hope that man will conform to the supreme virtue of the way and the laws of nature, including the essence of Eastern philosophy.

This documentary simultaneously tells a story in two very different places, thousands of miles apart: one follows a group of wind chasers who are working on the Gobi Desert for the cause of wind power generation, and the other records a group of Tao seekers who have left their homes for thousands of miles and come to Wudang Mountain to practise Taoism, observing, exploring and thinking along the way. Although thousands of miles apart, the two stories are inextricably linked to the need for harmony and balance between man (development) and nature (state).
